What's Out There Day - December 2016
The day began with a panel discussion, made up of Spire peer-support volunteers and others living and working with a SCI, who shared their lived experiences, interests and tips and tricks around how to navigate life within the wider community. There was great interest and discussion around areas such as travel, outdoor activities, staying fit and healthy, pain management and different ways to gain independence.
There was a social BBQ lunch enjoyed by all, followed by small group discussions, which provided an opportunity to problem solve and discuss issues and ideas in more detail. Topics discussed included home modifications, transport, returning to work, families, carers and rehab.
“We were in different groups giving tips... how to be fit, how to be independent, how you can drive a car..."
"Seeing how people with disabilities can be part of the sporting community...''
Later in the day a few community sporting options were display which included a demo wheelchair basketball game and accessible scuba diving in the Hydro Therapy Pool - for those that like nature and under water activities!
A wide range of exhibits were also available; including modified vehicles - including an accessible caravan and a ute with a robotic wheelchair hoist, travel options, a sailing simulator, leisure equipment and modified gardening and fishing equipment.
Spire and the Royal Talbot thoroughly enjoyed putting on the last WoT Day for 2016 and look forward to holding more interesting, helpful and enjoyable days in the New Year!
