Shepparton SCI Regional Network October 2016
The second Shepparton SCI Regional Network meeting was held on October 5th at The Peppermill Inn Hotel where the group spent the day getting to know each other, sharing their tips, experiences and thoughts.
It was great to see some new faces attend and contribute to lively discussion, building the group’s momentum with lots of useful ideas in moving forward.
Staff assistance at the Peppermill was excellent, they were very keen to learn more about wheelchair etiquette, and even sat in on some of the meeting so they can better cater to the group.
One participant, Nigel, came along with his new Firefly, an electric power wheel that is attached to his manual chair. Nigel’s Firefly was fundraised through local community efforts including an outdoor sculpture exhibition, Quirky Outdoor Design Project, organised by Sue who is also a group member. The exhibition showcased Nigel’s metal sculptures and he has promised to bring along some examples of his work to the next network meeting.
Another member, Peter, modelled his new trousers with handy pockets on the inner thighs that were customised by his sister. He also explained how he has been able to return to work as a truck driver by using an accessible hoist.
Cameron was also discovered to be a photographer and was assigned to capture future meetings. Overall, everyone in the group contributed to the energetic discussions about their lives and personal experiences and had a great time getting to know each other.
The next Shepparton SCI Regional Network meeting will be held again at The Peppermill Inn Hotel on November the 2nd at 11am. The group plans on setting their agenda for the next 12 months.
