Ballarat SCI Regional Network March 2017

11 April, 2017

Hand controlled vehicles, electric standing wheelchairs and wheelchair smart devices are just some of the equipment the group could play with at the March Ballarat SCI Regional Network meeting.

The meeting showcased some exciting and intelligent mobility services and equipment provided by Astec Equipment Services, with special guests from Permobil Australia and Total Ability.

Held at Astec Equipment Services, the group spent the day learning about various mobility products, including hand controls that can be fitted to cars and machinery, and powered standing wheelchairs that move while standing. Astec sell and repair mobility equipment, including custom made products. They also fit hand controls to vehicles, to assist people with driving independence, and provide roof mounted wheelchair hoists and agricultural equipment.

The group enjoyed exploring the showroom where they could experience an array of manual and power wheelchairs, scooters, beds, lounge chairs, lifting machines, shower chairs and various other mobility aids. They also got a peek inside the workshop where products are made and repaired!

Group members also met representatives from Permobil Australia and Total Ability. Total Ability provide driving aids to enhance the safety and comfort of drivers. They also offer a variety of hand control systems, which group member Alan uses himself.

Permobil Australia design and build creative high-tech mobility products, including power wheelchairs, TiLite manual wheelchairs and ROHO seating aids to prevent pressure sores. Permobil showed the group an electric standing wheelchair, used for both standing and as a wheelchair, and the SmartDrive Power Assist for manual wheelchairs. The SmartDrive is attached to the back of manual wheelchairs and controlled by a Bluetooth wristband. Users can track daily activity to monitor habits and minimise injury using a Smartphone App; this was of particular interest to the group.

Overall, the meeting was thoroughly enjoyed by all; both informative and interesting to hear about the various mobility services and equipment options that could be used in their own lives.
