Shepparton SCI Regional Network February 2017

24 February, 2017

The first group meeting of 2017 for the Shepparton SCI Regional Network group commenced with coffee and cake, at one of the members’ beautiful homes in scenic Tatura. The house has been purposely built for wheelchair use, with uniform floor levels (including the garage) and extensive use of tiles in the main areas. A butler’s pantry with its own sink houses all the appliances needed. The house has conveniently angled corners and the passageways are twice the width of those in normal houses. The group felt lucky to be able to have a look around this well thought out and designed home.

The weather was slightly temperamental, 25 degrees and overcast with intermittent rain, but not a problem, thanks to the fantastic sheltered entertaining area.

The meeting was predominantly a “food fest” with roast lamb, pork and beef prepared on a spit and everyone bringing a salad or desert. It was a big day with lots of chatter and banter and most importantly, laughter.

As part of the meeting activities, blank Shepparton Accessible Services sheets were distributed to all members present. The idea of these sheets is for the group to fill them in over time; including details of businesses and trades that are accessible or otherwise. The overall aim is to create a database that everyone can refer to and add to as time progresses.

The group also proudly received their high-vis orange SPiRE T-shirts!

In other news, Austin Health has scheduled its visit to Shepparton for the 1stand 2nd of March, which coincides perfectly with their next meeting on the 1stof March. Gabby, from Coloplast, will also be giving a presentation and handing out goitre pills at the meeting.

Bruce Cameron, a wheelchair user has created www.easyaccessaustralia.com.au, a resourceful travel guide focusing on accessibility in Sydney, where Bruce lives. The website is still in its early stages, with listings being added for Sydney (and a detailed entry for a location in Melbourne too).

Overall, the first meeting for the New Year was enthusiastically attended, with lots of great socialising through sharing knowledge, stories and experiences.
