Ballarat SCI Regional Network January 2017

31 January, 2017

The first meeting of the New Year for the Ballarat SCI Regional group was an informative and interesting one. The group met again at the Ballarat Yacht Club, but were lucky enough to have a private room called the ‘Commodore Room’ away from the main area.

The highlight of this year’s first group meeting was a session by Simone Millman from Coloplast. Simone presented a range of Coloplast’s continence products for both bladder and bowel, some of which the group was not yet aware of, and also products for people who use Intermittent Catheters (IC) as well as Indwelling catheters. Simone handed out information brochures and even some free products to try. To request a free sample, you can contact Coloplast or call or email them: 1800 653 317 or [email protected]

Simone also talked about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), as it is now rolling out in the Ballarat area and has already begun to impact a few group members. There were three categories of interest:

CORE – covers daily living products available from SWEP (Statewide Equipment Program)

CAPITAL – covers House alterations, vehicle modifications etc.

CAPACITY – courses you can take for jobs etc.

"Simone advised that people consider setting goals and determining what the requirements will be"

Simone advised that the members consider setting goals and determining what their requirements will be. She highlighted a few topics to think about, consider, and ask for (not limited to the following):

  • Continence products
  • Aids and equipment
  • Assistance with day-to-day activities
  • Long and short term goals e.g. travelling, leisure etc.
  • Social Participation e.g. joining a club, sports outings, and cinemas.
  • Education
  • Independence - Getting around your house or community with assistance or on your own.

Useful phone Apps available:

  • Wheelmate - this is a FREE app for your phone that gives you a list of places that have accessible toilets and parking spaces for your area.
  • CathNow – this FREE app is to remind you to either empty your leg bag or for those who use Intermittent Catheters (IC), to remind you to use the toilet.

Aside from the session by Simone, the group discussed other matters, specifically around setting goals and priorities for the year ahead. Members discussed ways to continue keeping the group open for others to attend meeting and activities. The group is always open to welcome new people, share new ideas and knowledge, experiences and more.

The group is seeing whether Astec Equipment Services, which deals in vehicle modifications (two members had their cars modified by them), wheelchairs, beds, show chairs, CPAP machines and masks, hoists, electronics etc., could have the members meet at their premises one afternoon, to show and talk about their products.

The Pain Management sessions with Dr Andrew Sinclair at the end of last year proved exceptionally beneficial, therefore he has offered to deliver another workshop, this time on SLEEP. Finally, at the end of the meeting, a Spire representative presented Barbara (main coordinator of the group) with the Spire Community Support Award, from the 2016 AGM that she was unable attend.
