Bendigo SCI Regional Network Meeting - June 2017

26 June, 2017

Accessible parking spots are very important to many people with a disability, but with restrictions and regulations varying across different municipalities, disabled parking is not as black and white as it seems.

This topic was at the crux of the June Bendigo SCI Regional Network meeting, held on June 21, where focused discussions were held on disabled parking restrictions, differences in regulation between cities, and the barrier-ridden nightmare faced by those with SCI when it comes to accessible parking in the Bendigo area.

The meeting was attended by a member of the Disability Inclusion Reference Committee and a representative from the City of Greater Bendigo Council. The Disability Inclusion Reference Committee are currently researching ways to improve disabled parking in Bendigo, and the council representative discussed disabled parking restrictions and community concerns regarding parking.

We expressed confusion over disabled parking laws in Bendigo, which vary greatly to those in Melbourne. For example, the Bendigo Council requires everyone to purchase a parking ticket, including those using disabled parking, and those with a disabled parking permit are not entitled to park double time in ordinary parking spots.

Confusion reigned supreme over disabled parking laws in Bendigo, which vary greatly to those in Melbourne.

The ticket machines are too tall, and it is incredibly difficult for those in wheelchairs to access the machines and return to their cars to display tickets.

We also discussed the cost and inconvenience of paying for parking. The ticket machines are too tall, and it is incredibly difficult for those in wheelchairs to access the machines and return to their cars to display tickets, as well as most parks not offering enough space to get in and out of vehicles. Additionally, the we talked about the overall lack of parking spaces available for people with disabilities.

For any ticketing or parking feedback please contact the City of Greater Bendigo Council, who oversee ticketing and parking inquiries.
