Shepparton SCI Regional Network Meeting - October 2017
For their latest meeting, the Shepparton SCI Regional Network welcomed Christine - a new member and first time attendee, Yvette - a Disability Support Worker from AQA, and Gabby Pragnaratne from Coloplast. The meeting was once again held in the function room at The Peppermill; a venue with excellent facilities and accommodating staff.
Gabby from Coloplast gave the group some insight into the NDIS, as it rolls out in the Shepparton area in January 2019. She pointed out that once you have transitioned to the NDIS, SWEP (State Wide Equipment Program) will become redundant. All products currently covered by SWEP will now be covered by the NDIS, so it is important to account for that when working out your support package. If one is already on the NDIS program and turns 65, they can opt to continue with the program, or swap over to the Commonwealth Continuity of Support Program. However, if you are over 65 and would have qualified for NDIS, then you should qualify for the aforementioned program.
Gabby pointed out that most people will need to seek assistance to complete the NDIS application. It is important to capture everything, nothing is too incidental to be included or excluded, even gardening, physio, pool maintenance and the like. Applications can be lodged six months before the roll out date, and the application usually takes 2-3 months to be processed. You can seek guidance on how to fill out the application forms from an OT, social worker, GP, the District Nursing team etc. Gabby even suggested that you could approach Coloplast for assistance regarding costings and productivity of continence products. She also suggested that if no contact has been made by the NDIS by September 2018, then you can contact NDIS on 1800 800 110 to check if they qualify for it. For any other help or assistance, one can contact their GP or call the NDIS Helpline on 1800 800 110 or visit their website.
Towards the end of the meeting, everyone was supplied with the Hume Region Information Booklet and asked to complete a list of accessible and inaccessible service providers to share with other members of the community.
