Geelong SCI Regional Network - September 2017

26 September, 2017

The Geelong SCI Regional Network held its second meeting on September 21 at Grovedale Community Hub. It was a great meeting, with some new faces and lots of new ideas!

Over the span of two hours, we discussed ideas for future meetings as well as possible events and activities to get involved in over the coming months. Many group members suggested hosting guest speakers to present of topics of interest. Another suggestion was to organise short trips and outings to various places, in and around Geelong. Everyone was also very interested in compiling a list of recommended local organisations and facilities that are not only accessible, but also provide great services i.e. doctors, chemists, equipment suppliers etc.

The meeting on October 25 will see the first guest speaker, with Bill Forrester from Travability presenting on everything related to accessible travel. Travability is a licensed Travel Agency and is dedicated to Inclusive Tourism through education, advocacy, and by providing accessibility information for the world’s best travel destinations. Bill has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to this topic area so all are encouraged to come along, ready with questions or advice you may have!

As the meeting came to an end, Naz (Spire Team Leader) spoke about Discovering the Power in Me (DPM). DPM is a 12-unit motivational/goal setting training program offered by Spire that is specifically designed for people with SCI. It combines video-based material with group discussion facilitated by people with lived-experience of SCI. To take part in the Geelong DPM please follow the link, answer a few short questions, and include what day/time would suit you best: www.surveymonkey.com/r/GeelongDPM
