Geelong SCI Regional Network Meeting - April 2018

5 May, 2018

The April meeting of the Geelong SCI Regional Network was held on April 16 at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. The group welcomed Trang and Rhys from Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, who talked about public liability and superannuation, and answered questions that the attendees had.

Trang spoke about Public Liability, which is where a person or company failed to take care of someone’s safety in public, and caused them to have a major injury or financial loss. Rhys discussed the possibilities of accessing early superannuation before 65 years of age if one has a SCI. These circumstances include financial hardship and compassionate grounds. If there is a permanent disability that makes it unlikely for someone to find employment within their experience, then one can access the superannuation early as well as have an insurance claim.

Everyone was surprised to learn that there were many cases where superannuation companies had clauses that honoured injury claims, resulting in pay outs. The attendees asked many questions, and many plan to follow up with their past public liability and superannuation cases.

Trang’s take home message: Talk to a lawyer if you have a present concern or past case. She acknowledged that some people may not feel ready or comfortable speaking to a lawyer, so she advised people to let the lawyer know first, and follow up when the time comes to start the case.

Rhys’ take home message: There is no time limit for making a claim to access superannuation early, so chatting to a superannuation expert from a law firm can often be helpful.

All in all, everyone had a great time catching up and learning about all the valuable information provided by the guest speakers.
