Shepparton SCI Regional Network Meeting – April 2018
For their April meeting, the Shepparton SCI Regional Network came together to tour the purpose- built home and caravan of one of the members.
Everyone was impressed and inspired by Wayne and Carol’s home and caravan, both of which have been adapted to suit Wayne’s needs. With over 40 years of experience in a wheelchair, Wayne and Carol knew exactly what was needed, and the end product is fantastic. The one-level house has wide verandas, passageways and doors, and an accessible swimming pool. Despite the land being on two levels, Wayne is able to get around all of his property, with the help of a motorised device he clips to the front of his chair.
The caravan is built wide enough for Wayne to be able to do a 180 degree turn. A shower and toilet has been built to accommodate his shower chair. There are slide-out drawers outside the caravan, so he can cook on the BBQ. The shed (where the caravan is housed) has been designed for Wayne to be able to do his metal work (grinding and welding). He even mows the lawns on his ride-on mower.
After the tour, everyone agreed that a big imagination and a “can do” attitude can go a long way in helping one achieve a lifestyle that is suited to one’s needs. As one attendee summed it up nicely, “stepping outside your comfort zone and taking that next step isn’t as far away as you think”.
