Women with SCI Network meeting – August 2018
For their August meeting the Women with SCI Network group met at Span Community House in Thornbury. The session was led by Sal Dema, Manager of Peer Support Services at the Austin Hospital, and Yoga and Meditation instructor with many years of experience.
Despite the wild weather outside, there was a good turnout; there was plenty of tea and coffee, and a warm, cozy space to get comfortable and relax in.
The first half hour of the session was dedicated to explaining the multiple types of Yoga, and the different parts of oneself that we experience. For example, the physical body and emotional self, that can be positively impacted through the practices of Yoga and Meditation.
The group members then had the opportunity to partake in a gentle, guided Yoga session. The areas primarily focused on were the eyes, neck and shoulders. Following this was a guided meditation, a fabulous tool to keep “centered” in the moment.
The feedback was positive, with one participant stating that they were pleasantly surprised at how much they enjoyed the session!
The Women with SCI Network group aims to create a comfortable, open and confidential space that encourages everyone to share ideas and experiences. Their vision is to connect and support women living with spinal cord injury so if this interested you please contact us via the below details.
The next Women with SCI network meeting will be held on October 6, where the group is looking forward to undertaking an instructional and physical self-defense class for all abilities!
