Geelong SCI Regional Network Meeting - February 2018
The first meeting of the New Year was held at the Grovedale Community Hub, with twelve people in attendance. The meeting commenced with a talk by Nik, a Parking Officer. Nik talked about accessible parking areas, and how his job wasn’t necessarily about issuing tickets but also educating people about incorrect parking habits; including illegal parking in disabled parking spots.
The next speaker was Trish from LeisureLink, a facility that has dedicated time and money to ensure their facility is wheelchair accessible. Their swimming pool is fully accessible with ramped access into the pool and they provide a wheelchair that can be easily wheeled into the water. Trish strongly encourages all those with a spinal cord injury (SCI) to make use of their facilities, as they have trained staff that can create individualised gym programs based on each person’s specific needs and requirements.
The next speaker, Chary, spoke about various council initiatives, some of which have been designed to improve access to the community, e.g., Beach Wheelchairs, Beach Matting, and Changing Places accessible change rooms. The group felt inspired after listening to Chary, and so for their March meeting, will meet at Eastern Beach to check out the accessible beach matting.
For the February meeting, the group gained valuable information about various issues from the three guest speakers, and it was a great way to kick off the first meeting of the New Year.
