Geelong SCI Regional Network Meeting - June 2018

4 July, 2018

On Monday 18th June, the Geelong SCI Regional Network met at the warm Royal Geelong Yacht Club to learn more about Parallel Sport’s vast connections with local accessible sports clubs. Many Paralympians were also nurtured here in Geelong by one of the many clubs.

The guest speaker from Parallel Sports is also a member of the group, and spoke about how his love of sports and athletics led him to work for Parallel Sports. Parallel Sports has connections with wheelchair basketball, rugby, tennis, table tennis, hand cycling, rowing, and athletics. He encouraged anyone with an interest to give a go and join one of the clubs, as there are programs that suits people of all abilities and skills. You can join socially to learn more about the sport and get fit, or join at a professional level. All needed equipment are supplied by Parallel Sports, whether that is hoists or specialised manual or electric wheelchairs.

The group enjoyed hearing about the different activities offered in Geelong, and agreed there will always be someone willing to help you make things more accessible when you ask. A student exercise physiologist from Barwon Health’s McKellar Centre also encouraged the use of an accredited exercise physiologist to help take full advantage of one's strengths and abilities. Those who have used an exercise physiologist agreed it is a great service.

Afterwards, one of the members shared his huge success of lobbying the government to improve help given to injured cyclists. The new bill will allow cyclists who had accidents with stationary vehicles to access TAC benefits, regardless of whether it was to work or not. Spire and the group congratulated him on this success for all cyclists! Overall the group enjoyed the productive meeting, welcomed back past members, and shared their tips and tricks on a range of topics.
