Women with SCI Network meeting – June 2018
For their June meeting the Women with SCI Network group met at Span Community House in Thornbury. The group welcomed guest speaker, Stephanie Hulsmann, who has her own experience of spinal injury as well as an academic background in researching and writing her thesis on ‘Sexuality Post Spinal Cord Injury: The lived Experiences of Women’. Now with a Masters in Sexology and trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy, Stephanie facilitated a group discussion around sex, sexuality, body image and relationships.
The group members had the opportunity to ask questions and share their own personal experiences in a safe and non-judgmental space. There was authentic, sensitive conversation and sharing from several of the group members about some of the challenges that are specific to identifying as a woman and navigating and nurturing a positive relationship with ones’ body and sexuality post-spinal cord injury.
One of the suggestions was around connecting to body-positive networks via the internet and social media - to create a larger support network and as a way to access others’ lived experiences. Overall the group enjoyed the session with Stephanie, the opportunity to share or listen to like-experiences and to learn more about the importance of being in-tune with yourself.
The next Women with SCI group will be held in August, with the group welcoming Sal Dema, who will take the group through a yoga and meditation session. They meeting will also cover the health benefits of yoga and the relationship between mind, body and spirit.
The Women with SCI Network group aims to create a comfortable, open and confidential space that encourages everyone to share ideas and experiences. Their vision is to connect and support women living with spinal cord injury so if this interested you please contact us via the below details.
