Shepparton Regional SCI Network Meeting – March 2018
For their March meeting, the Shepparton SCI Regional Network group welcomed guest speakers, Wendy and Kathryn, two very knowledgeable Rural Access Workers.
The Rural Access and Inclusion Officer is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services as part of the Building Inclusive Communities Program.
The roles of Rural Access Workers include:
- Support people with a disability to fully participate in their local community
- Build and strengthen the community’s capacity to support people with a disability and their families
- Work with existing disability support providers to enhance their capacity to provide relevant and appropriate supports in their community
- Improve access to information about relevant services and community activities available to people with a disability in their communities
The group had a lively discussion about the roles of Rural Access Workers, and found out the many different ways people can do to make their community more accessible for people of all abilities. Whilst Wendy (Nexus Primary Health in Broadford) and Kathryn (Greater Shepparton Council) are not miracle workers, they will put forward the group’s suggestions to council.
To find your local Rural Access Officer, contact your local Council for more information.
