Geelong SCI Regional Network Meeting - May 2018
The Geelong SCI Regional Network met on May 21 at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, where they shared their varied experiences of living with a SCI, with the beautiful view of the harbour in the background.
The group first reflected on the Maurice Blackburn guest speakers from the previous meeting, with the general consensus being that it was a useful session, especially on claiming the Total Permanent Disability as part of their superannuation. The group then shared their experiences on superannuation, how to access superannuation post-injury, and exchanged contact information of people who helped them to make a successful claim. Most lawyers give free advice on superannuation and provide their services at a reasonable cost, so it is best to shop around for the most appropriate person.
Following that, the group discussed their own tips and tricks for SCI related problems. Bowel management was a popular topic, with everyone sharing their experiences, the benefits of certain regimes (e.g. colostomy bag and night time routine), and changes in bowel management over the years. The group also discussed preventing urinary tract infections, weight management, exercise, navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and the need for more local doctors to gain SCI-related experience. Everyone agreed that for local doctors to gain that experience, the SCI community/individual will need to take the initiative to share their SCI experiences with their doctor, and in return learn from their doctor’s experiences.
The group also agreed that there is a big step between being discharged from rehabilitation to becoming independent at home. The group suggested developing a “tips and tricks booklet” for those still in rehabilitation to provide a heads-up on the challenges of becoming independent at home. Everyone greatly enjoyed the relaxing social catch-up, and gained new ideas to improve their everyday life through the discussions with other members of the group with different SCI experiences.
