Mornington SCI Regional Network Meeting - May 2018
Living outside of Melbourne can be socially isolating for people with SCI. The newly formed Mornington SCI Regional Network was established to bring together like-minded people living with a SCI in the Mornington Peninsula area. The aim is to connecting people to discuss issues of importance to them, and to enjoy each other’s company. As always, families, friends and carers are welcome.
The group met at the Steeples Mornington Restaurant for their latest meeting. The newly formed network, which has met twice before, is an initiative of two locals living with a SCI. They were connected through their contact at Leisure Balance. Leisure Balance supports individuals with disabilities to improve their quality of life through participation in recreational activities of their choice.
During a lovely lunch, the group had lively discussions on various interests and subjects. One discussion everyone enjoyed hearing about was from one of the members who went on a cruise for over 100 days! He travelled to many amazing countries and recommended this type of travel to others with a spinal cord injury. He said wheelchair access was fantastic overall, but unfortunately not all ports were accessible.
Despite being new, it was great to see 11 people of different experiences getting to know one another and sharing their experiences. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to network, getting support, and giving support. The group looks forward to getting together for the next meeting next month!
