Bendigo SCI Regional Network Meeting - November 2018
For the November meeting, the Bendigo SCI Regional Network met at the Boardwalk Bendigo restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Lake Weeroona. The Network welcomed Jasmine from Sports Focus to learn more about the accessible Sailability program which takes place on the Lake.
Sports Focus is a not-for-profit local organisation that supports sport clubs and organisations to provide a safe, healthy and inclusive environment for the community. One of the programs they support is Sailability, which is “an entry level program for people of all abilities to get into sailing and all activities at clubs.” The program welcomes anyone with a disability to learn how to sail safely with experienced staff and volunteers, and provides safety vests, hoists and slings.
The Network was pleasantly surprised to learn that although participants will be in a boat with a volunteer, you can steer the boat for the 30 minutes session using your arm, chin or tongue! The boats are also weighted at the bottom, so it cannot tip over. And once you are experienced enough, you can even sail by yourself! Many members of the group are now keen to try Sailability, which runs once per month between October and April each year.
After the great presentation, the group enjoyed a delicious lunch while catching up with a few returning members. Potential activities for 2019 were also discussed, and everyone is looking forward to doing something new and different as a group. For December’s meeting, everyone is excited to finish off the year with a joint BBQ with the Ballarat SCI Regional Network in Daylesford!
