Geelong SCI Regional Network Meeting - November 2018
In November, the Geelong SCI Regional Network met at Napona Restaurant in Ocean Grove to welcome Phil from The Disabled Surfers Association of Australia and learn about their inclusive surfing events. The Network enjoyed meeting in a different area of Geelong, and welcomed returning members of the group.
Phil explained the award-winning inclusive surfing days are held on the first Sunday in February and March, and is a great opportunity to surf in a safe environment while being supporting by a line of volunteers who make sure you do not fall off the surfboard! It is a free event with sausage sizzles, food vans, shelter, and a great atmosphere. It is catered for people of all abilities, including people living with a physical or intellectual disability, people who are ventilated dependent, and kids and adults.
Many questions were asked, especially in regards to safety and feedback from past participants. Phil mentioned that they recently acquired new wetsuits which can fit anyone of any size and ability, and can be easily put on or taken off. The Network was intrigued by the event and many are keen to try it as a potential Network meeting next year! Afterwards, the group enjoyed a lovely lunch while having a catch up. Potential activities for 2019 were also discussed, and everyone is looking forward to doing something new and different as a group! For December’s meeting, everyone is excited to finish off the year with group sailing with Royal Geelong Yacht Club!
