Women with SCI Network meeting – October 2018

9 October, 2018

For their October meeting the Women with SCI Network met at Span Community House in Thornbury. Fiona Skene from Wise Self-Defense facilitated an instructional and practical self-defense class for all abilities.

The session focused on aspects of psychology to defuse and create behaviours that decreases the likelihood of a situation happening, not escalating it. Fiona spoke to the group about raising self-esteem, self empowerment and topics of anti bullying, cyber safety and self-assertiveness. Each of the women in the group brought along a partner to assist them in acting out real-life scenarios, how you may go about defusing them and protecting yourself if the situation calls for it.
Everyone left the session with something - feeling more educated, found new ways of thinking and discovered how mindset and empowerment can be incredibly useful in many vulnerable situations. Overall the session was an extremely valuable one, with the core teaching that taking control of your safety, rather than letting your fear inhibit you, will contribute greatly to living and feeling safe in your community.
The women will meet again in December, marking one year since they formed.
