Ballarat SCI Regional Network Meeting - September 2018
The Network first met for a lovely lunch at the accessible Lunch Curry Star, which was previously a training facility for people living with disabilities. Then the group visited the Ballarat Mechanics Institute where they were welcomed by Phil, President of the Institute, who gave a private tour of the purpose and history of this historic building.
The Heritage Library stores valuable 19th century books available for reading and loan to members. They also have newspapers including the Ballarat Courier from 1867, and an extensive photography collection by Max Harris who had over 50 years of photography experience. The Institute also has a beautifully restored Main Hall which seats 300 people. It has a new jarrah floor sourced from Western Australia, repainted in heritage colours, gold (sourced from California of all places), curtains in rich material, and lighting that can be adjusted for films.

The Hooper Room is where cards, chess and draughts are played and two fires warmed the room. While the Humffray Room’s renovation involved use of 14 different colours, and was built to honour JB Humffray, the first President and first Parliamentary Member for Ballarat East.
The group enjoyed learning about the history, purpose and function of the Ballarat Mechanics Institute, and thanks Phil for his time and effort in conducting the tour!
