Shepparton SCI Regional Network Meeting - September 2018
There were 18 participants on the day which was a fantastic turn out! The Network also welcomed a new group member to the group, and another member who returned after an extended break.
The three topics that were the focus of the discussions were physical health, transport and environment. Given the group’s different disabilities, the main focus was health and the local hospital. Many members of the group felt they do not receive enough support from hospital staff as they have not had the necessary training to look after people living with a SCI.
Each participant had their own stories to tell. This point took up most of the session discussion. The group briefly discussed public transport and in particular V/Line train services which sometimes changes to a bus service without notice from Seymour to Shepparton, leaving wheelchair-bound travellers stranded.
In regards to the topic of environment, it was mainly the difficulties of getting around town and where one can and cannot go. The Network enjoyed the productive discussion and looks forward to receiving feedback and recommendations from Deakin University in the near future.
