Women with SCI Network - February 2018
The group welcomed Curtis Palmer, Personal Trainer and ‘Fitness and Nutrition Guy’ who spoke about health, fitness, goal setting and the benefits of being active. Curtis takes a holistic approach to well-being by encouraging 360 degree functional movement. The group listened to why it’s important to become an expert at your own body; knowing how it likes to move, what feels good or bad and honing in on what provides enjoyment and what results in stress or anxiety. Another key piece of advice from Curtis was that change is a slow process, but one that is worth it if done mindfully and with a goal in sight. Taking advantage of the warmer weather, the next meeting on April 7th will be a wheelchair yoga session, as well as some tips on how you can apply the movements to every day life! It should be lots of fun and a great opportunity for the group to continue to interact and get to know each other better. Following the next meeting will be June 2nd where the group will host a guest speaker presenting on relationships, sexual health and sexuality.
During the meeting the members also went over the Terms of Reference, which includes a mission for the group: The Women with SCI Network group aims to create a comfortable, open and confidential space that encourages everyone to share ideas and experiences; with a vision of connecting and supporting women living with spinal cord injury (SCI).
Moving forward the group will also use a platform to both house and share documents and information as well as be a place where group members can chat, shares ideas and so on. So watch this space!
