A day on the water in Geelong

30 April, 2019

Ballarat Network members journeyed to Geelong in April for a joint fishing trip with members of the Geelong Network, on board the specially built accessible charter boat Corio Princess.

Four members and their partners joined six Geelong members for the day on the water, hosted by captain Charles Neal, who built the Corio Princess, and crewmember Brian.

Also on board was a reporter for the ABC, who interviewed Charles and some of us about accessibility in our respective communities.

Charles designed the Corio Princess with accessibility at the front of his mind. It has an accessible toilet, a roof for all weather, and flat deck surfaces. It has been shaped to minimise its rocking back and forth on the waves.

We set out from St Helen’s Pier, on the Rippleside foreshore, after negotiating a steep ramp to the pier from the car park.

Charles and Brian were excellent hosts, and ensured everyone got on board safely.

When we stopped for a light lunch of pizza and hot dogs, cooked for us on board, we were surrounded by some beautiful jellyfish.

Everyone had a try at fishing. Charles and Brian went around the boat teaching us how to bait the line and use the rods.

Soon, everyone had caught a fish. But they were all too small to keep, and had to be thrown back into the waters.

By the end of the day, everyone had tried their hand at baiting the hook and using the fishing rod. Those not interested in fishing were content chatting, catching up, and encouraging the fishers to reel in their fish.

Although this was the first fishing trip for most of us, everyone found themselves easily hooked on the experience. We are looking forward to getting back on board the Corio Princess later in the year.
