Cruising down the Murray River

30 January, 2020

To celebrate the end of 2019, the Echuca (Shepparton) Regional Network met with Campaspe Shire Council, and afterwards took a relaxing cruise down the Murray River. It was one of the biggest meeting with 14 people and their family members.

At the Henry’s Bridge Hotel, the Network had a productive meeting with Sam, Community Engagement Manager. The Network learned about the Council’s new Access and Inclusion Strategy 2020 – 2026. The plan aims to improve access and reduce barriers for the whole community. There will be nine communities of priority, which includes people with disability, youth, people with mental illness, and culturally diverse communities. Read the Strategy here:

Everyone also had the opportunity to voice their experiences of areas with good physical access and areas with poor access. They also raised the possibility of Council forming a Disability Reference Committee.

Sam acknowledged there are many challenges in improving access, and the need to have more community consultations. The Network is looking forward to building this positive relationship with Sam in 2020.

Sam encourages everyone to lodge any requests to maintain services at

Council also has a complaints process:

After the meeting, the Network made their way down the Echuca Wharf to board MV Mary Ann for a lunch cruise. The dock is located behind the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre. One of the members brought a portable ramp to help everyone safely board the MV Mary Ann.

It was a beautiful day for a cruise and lunch. It was a relaxing opportunity to share lived experiences with each other. Many members were interested in taking the cruise again in the future. It was a fun way to end the year.
