Ballarat SCI Regional Network Meeting – January 2019
On 17 January 2019, the Ballarat SCI Regional Network met at the Ballarat Yacht Club and was introduced to sailing by Mark -a sailor, community volunteer, Network member, and a paraplegic. Mark’s history is with sailing and the water, as can be understood by his inspiring presentation. Injured whilst competing in the Melbourne to Hobart Yacht race saw him with limited use of his legs but not his momentum in advocating for better disability access in the overall community and in developing the Sailability Ballarat program we know now!
The day enabled the group to experience yachting first hand, with the Ballarat Yacht Club hosting a training session. Brian and the team explained to us what drove a yacht, the harness and safety. The Sailability program meets weekly to enable people with disabilities a chance to experience moving on water. The Club has 8 yachts and conducts weekly opportunity sessions for aspiring sailors.
There is a hoist sling lift for participants to be placed into a two person (note, equal opportunity inclusion!) yacht with a volunteer, who skippered the yacht for a short course of the lake. Unfortunately weather conditions were such that only two members of the Network had the chance to experience sailing. But it has certainly motivated both to have another try with operating the yacht solo!
A few weeks later, Ballarat Yacht Club kindly offered the Network the opportunity of a weekly structured sailing program! The program will run every Thursday morning, starting from 28th February and finishing 4th April. If you are interested in participating or observing, contact Spire for more information!
