Building hope and resilience with Spire’s DPM workshop

31 May, 2019

In May, Gippsland Regional Network members participated in a three-day workshop called Discovering the Power in Me, and celebrated our completing the course over dinner at the Traralgon restaurant MoMo.

The 12-unit, video-based workshop was conducted at the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club over three weeks. It was facilitated by Nazim Erdem and Josh Hose from Spire, who have SCI lived experience.

The purpose of the workshop, whose title abbreviates to DPM, is to build hope, strength, resilience, and self-efficacy specifically for people living with an SCI and their families.

It is designed to help people assert control over their lives.

It was obvious that everyone got something out of the course, whether they were present on all three days or for just one day. Many participants found it very beneficial.  We talked about goal setting and how we can achieve those goals, and completed the workshop by making affirmations.

It was interesting to see people’s goal-setting and mindset changing positively from day one to day three, as we addressed hurdles that we had erected for ourselves subconsciously.

Spire has run this workshop for nearly 10 years. Here are some comments from past participants:

“I would like to let others know (about the DPM training) because it is very useful and it allows you to see beyond the circle. It also allows you to get to know yourself better.”

“I really appreciated the opportunity to step out of my life and evaluate where I am at and where I am going. I think the planning and positive thinking will stay with me and will influence the way I talk with my son also.”

“The course has given me the tools to help me identify where I need to make changes in my thoughts and behaviour to provide positive results in my life. I’m using positive self-talk and affirmations to transform my thinking and beliefs”

Our gathering for dinner at MoMo was a great way to reflect on what we had learned. We continued to discuss travel, accessibility and mental health in this informal setting.
