Off to a rolling start in lawn bowls at Moama
Shepparton-Echuca Regional Network members crossed the border in May, to try out lawn bowls from a special wheelchair at the Moama Bowling Club (MBC) in NSW.
We met at the club for lunch, welcomed a new member, had a good social catch-up, and planned activities for the next few months.
After lunch, group member John showed us how to play wheelchair lawn bowls using the specialised chair that he had encouraged the club to purchase.
The $4500 wheelchair arrived at the MBC in December. Its use is free for anyone who wants to give bowling a go.
The chair is lower than a normal wheelchair, so that you can get close enough to the ground to release a bowl smoothly.
We enjoyed watching John’s demonstration, and having a go ourselves at bowling. And we talked about ways to adapt the game to each individual’s needs.
The trip was also memorable for how the group worked to resolve a tyre incident encountered early in the day by Pete from Spire.
Drawing on our local knowledge, we referred Pete to a service that he says performed the fastest tyre change he’s ever experienced. Many thanks from Pete to each member for their resourcefulness.
Among activities we agreed to set up over the next few months were:
- Meeting with the Rural Access Officer in Echuca;
- Wheelchair rugby;
- Lawn bowling;
- Sailing in Shepparton;
- Canoeing and a barbecue at Mathoura.
It was an eventful and enjoyable day for all.
