Learning about inclusive outdoor fun with YMCA
Last month, the Ballarat Community Network met in Bacchus Marsh for a social catch up, and to learn more about the YMCA outdoor camps.
At Back to Bacchus restaurant, the Network first enjoyed getting to know each other over lunch. Although all the members have been to past meetings before, this was the first time where people local to Bacchus Marsh, Ballarat and Daylesford came together. There was a great atmosphere as everyone shared their own experiences on NDIS, TAC, assistive equipment and tips on travel.
Then, Rob from Lady Northcote YMCA introduced YMCA camps. He explained the outdoor camps aim to be inclusive and accessible to people of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds. At Lady Northcote YMCA in particular, they have inclusive accommodation onsite and outdoor activities such as canoeing, yabby catching, bush cooking, a giant swing with a “cocoon harness”, archery, and a Heritage Trail.
Rob says YMCA thrives on feedback from participants so all members of the community can be physically active. YMCA is also willing to cater to group needs and interests, and is keen to hear suggestions for improvement.
More information on Lady Northcote Camp, and other camps, is found here: http://www.camps.ymca.org.au/locate/lady-northcote.html
Rob also spoke about how he worked with and learned from Jason Ellery, a fellow Spire community member who was heavily involved in making YMCA camps more inclusive. Along with Parks Victoria, they created a Universal High Ropes course at YMCA Camp Manyung near Mornington Peninsula: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98LD3toXtYU
If there is enough interest, trying outdoor activities may be something the Network can do as a group in the near future. Suggestions for potential group activities are welcome –contact Spire with your ideas.
