Having a ball at Geelong Table Tennis Association
In November, the Geelong Regional Network enjoyed learning to play table tennis at the Geelong Table Tennis Association.
The Network first met at the nearby restaurant called The Yardz for lunch. It was great to catch up with everyone and what activities they’ve been doing in the last month. Many have been taking advantage of the warmer weather to return to sailing with Sailability.
Sailability is an entry level program for people of all ages and abilities to learn how to sail. The boats are weighted so it is difficult to tip over. A few members of the Network have enjoyed learning how to navigate the two-person boat, and learning how to catch the wind with the sail. Sailing has ended for Term 4; however, the Royal Geelong Yacht Club will be undergoing renovations in 2020. Sailing will start again in October 2020. After lunch, the Network crossed the road to the Geelong Table Tennis Association. Fabian and Diego were our coaches for the day. After some “warm up” exercises against the automatic ball machine, the coaches and the players (Network members) had a better idea of each individual’s experiences and abilities. Fabian and Diego coached people living with quadriplegia or paraplegia to play to their abilities.
Over the next couple of hours, Fabian and Diego supported the group to play against each other and against the ball machine. It wasn’t long before everyone understood the rules of the game. Everyone enjoyed the challenges of table tennis, and said that although it was not stressful on the arms, it certainly gave their bodies a good work out.
Many members of the Network enjoyed the day so much that they are interested in playing table tennis in their own time. The coaches welcome everyone to join in and play. The venue generally opens in the evenings. Contact Fabian via email to let him know of your interest: http://www.tabletennisgeelong.com.au/
