Sailing away on Albert Park Lake

7 January, 2020

For the last 2019 meeting, the Women with SCI Network tried something special by going to Albert Park Lake for sailing.

It was a sunny day with gentle wind - a beautiful day for the beginner sailors. For the majority of the group, it was their first-time sailing.

The Network was met by Flo and Gavin from Sailability who explained the Hansa boats were modified so they are easier to steer than regular boats. To steer, turning left on the rudder would make the boat turn left, and turning right would make it turn right. For the sails, pulling the strings to make the sails catch the wind would make the boat sail faster. The boats have weight at the bottom, so there is little chance that it will tip over.

The Network then used the sling and hoist to transfer from wheelchair to boat. The Network sailed around Albert Park Lake and saw the city skyline, tried to race each other, and saw many swans and baby swans. Flo and Gavin supported the group with advice from their rescue boat. Over time, each “sailor” started to better understand how to use the sails to catch the wind. It was a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

After getting back to dry land, many said it was such a fun experience that they would return and sail again.

The Network then had lunch at a nearby picnic area. It was a good opportunity to share information on topics such as using raised beds for gardening, accessible venues including the Playhouse performing arts theatre in Melbourne, companion cards, and recommended doctors and physiotherapists.

One member summarised the day as “it was a great experience. I really enjoyed being out on the sun, learning how to sail and sharing lunch with great company.”
