Catching up again in Ballarat and learning about continence service
In October, the Ballarat Regional Network had looked forward to trying archery in Ballarat. Unfortunately that was postponed due to wet weather. Instead, the Network met at the Blue Bell Hotel for a hearty lunch and a presentation on continence services from Hollister.
As some people could not make it to last month’s meeting in Bacchus Marsh, this Ballarat meeting was an opportunity for everyone to share what they have been up to in the last two months. A few members of the Network also shared their early experiences of sailing with Sailability Ballarat on Lake Wendouree. They encouraged other members of the group to go and give it a try.
Sailability is a volunteer-run “entry level program for people of all abilities to get into sailing.” They have safety vests, and hoists and slings available. Sailability says the boats have weight at the bottom, so there is little chance that it will tip over. After lunch the group heard from Jane, Registered Nurse and Continence Care Manager, who gave an informal presentation on Hollister. Hollister is an organisation that provides individuals with support services and products for the bladder and bowel.
The group learned about the different ways that Hollister can support individuals living with SCI, such as catheters with new technology, free product samples, and a support program that provides free intermittent catheters to patients awaiting NDIS funding approval. Hollister also have online resources for those looking for more information about managing bladder: www.hollister.com.au/continencecarelearningcentre
There are many organisations that provide continence support, so it is important to find one that will suit you best. For more information on Hollister, click on this link: http://www.hollister.com.au/en-au/continencecare
Despite the cold and wet weather, it was still a productive and social day. Once the weather gets warmer, the Network hopes to try archery again.
