Martin is an honorary Fellow in Philosophy at the University of Melbourne, and has been active in disability advocacy. He was also instrumental in the creation of a UN treaty for disability rights.
Martin lives with C4, C5, C6 complete SCI, caused due to a car accident in 1985. Since then, he has achieved his doctorate in Philosophy, become an honorary fellow at the University of Melbourne, and travelled extensively.
Martin lives with a housemate in a modified house with a paved garden, widened doorways, roller door and a modified bathroom. He uses a powered chair, a manual chair and a ceiling hoist, and gets around on public transport and taxis.
Martin has traveled extensively, having been to Europe, North America, inter‐state, including Tasmania and Darwin. He travels with and without carers. He often travels up to his brother’s farm in Alexandra in north‐east Victoria. Among his varied interests are astronomy and science, photography, bird watching and philosophy. Martin believes in living green and is currently learning German.
Martin is living with C4 complete spinal cord injury for the past 33 years.
